One of the messiest spots in any house almost always seems to be the area under the kitchen sink. No matter what you do, there are so many reasons this is a tough spot to keep tidy. Why is it hard to organize under the kitchen sink?

• It is such a small space. It is hard to work in cramped quarters. Whenever you pull something out, something else usually topples over.

• It tends to get wet under there, which just makes it an even messier area to deal with.

• It’s hard knowing what you should and shouldn’t keep under there.

• It’s an easy area to forget about. Depending on how your kitchen is set up, you may only use the under-the-sink space to store items you do not need to grab all that often. But it can become an eyesore when you neglect it, and a righteous mess when you do need something.

So what are some ways to organize under the kitchen sink? Here are a few suggestions:

• Always start by emptying it out completely! You need to clean up under there before you can start getting organized. Wipe it down and get rid of any mold or water spots or lining which has gotten damp and crumpled.

• Put down new lining after you get rid of the old lining. Pick something you like; if you feel like you can beautify the area under your kitchen sink, you are more likely to want to keep it neat. If you can, try and purchase washable shelf liner. That way you can wipe it down in the future without having to replace it.

• Recognize that some of the items you put under the sink will be damp, and you need some kind of water-proof setting for them. What’s the easiest way to store your wet sponges, brushes, and so on? Plastic bins for the kitchen! This is one of the best ways to organize under the kitchen sink. The bins will protect the floor of you cabinet and your shelves from further damage and allow these items to dry.

• Along with your plastic bin storage, you may find a few shallow acrylic trays to be a great addition. These are perfect for holding detergents and the like, and keep them easily accessible. You also may want to invest in a rack which you can install on the inside of the cabinet door (make sure it will close).

It isn’t easy to organize under the kitchen sink, and you will have to put some planning into it to make sure that you don’t overfill the cabinet. Figure out which items will work best under the sink and whether there are any items you may want to relocate to other areas in the kitchen. Then buy the supplies that you need to get the job done. Once you have this part of the kitchen in order, it will be so much easier for you to get your cooking and cleaning done each day.
