Chances are no matter where you live in the country, you have encountered someone who has had the flu, if you haven’t been the one to come down with it yourself. While being sick is no fun, and you probably don’t feel too energized if you are, it is important to keep your household clean and organized. If someone else in your household is sick, you should definitely take these steps right away.

Clean:
• Towels, especially hand towels. Change out hand towels regularly.
• Bathrooms. Wipe down handles, and soak toothbrushes in hydrogen peroxide.
• Kitchen. Try to keep handles wiped down in this part of the house as well.
• Bedding. Change out pillow cases regularly, and wash bedding after recovery begins.
• Electronics. Wipe down mice, controllers and keyboards (carefully).
• Toys. If children in the household are sick, you should wipe down their toys to prevent re-infection.

The most important areas to keep clean are common areas like the kitchen and any shared bathrooms. You may want to wipe down doorknobs around your house as well. But it is also essential for private rooms and items to be cleaned so that someone who comes down with the flu doesn’t have to go through it twice.

Organize:
If you can, try and organize for the flu before it strikes. Organizing can be hard work, and you need your rest if you get the flu. Here are some chores to do now which will make your life easier if someone in your house gets sick (especially if it is you).

• This is a great time to organize your first aid supplies in a plastic bin with dividers. While most people recover from the flu without a problem, it is smart to get these supplies in order, especially if someone very young or old is living in your household. This year’s flu is so bad that even healthy adults have been going to the ER.

• While you are at it, organize your medical cabinet so that painkillers and disinfectants are easy to reach.

• This is also the perfect opportunity to organize your cleaning supplies. Get your detergents, buckets, rags and other cleaning supplies in order so that all of your cleaning tasks are easier. Not only will this pay off during the flu season, but it will also make your chores easier throughout the rest of the year.

This year’s flu is pretty severe, but if you take extra steps to keep your home clean, you can hopefully prevent the flu from striking your household. And if it does, well-organized cleaning and medical supplies will make it much easier to keep up with things around the home even if you or a family member does get sick. Keeping the home clean can lessen the duration of the sickness and prevent others in your home from coming down with influenza.
