Trying to find a bigger home for your hamsters? If you have been searching online and at pet stores, you have probably found out that large hamster cages are very expensive. But you can build your own for cheap if you make a large plastic container for storage into a hamster bin cage.

In Part 1, I shared the materials you need for this project (including a clear plastic storage bin) along with the first six steps. Now I will share the remaining steps.

7. Create the holes for the cable ties where you placed your marks. To do this, you can use the soldering iron or you can heat up a ¼ drill bit or a knife point and punch it through.

8. Next, heat up your knife (if you haven’t already).

9. Start slicing through the plastic so you can cut your window. If you wind up with any little cracks, you have a couple of options. You can place duct tape on either side to prevent the cracks from getting larger, or you can use the solder to melt the plastic back together.

10. Once you remove the plastic from the middle, you will have your window. At this point, you need to grab some sandpaper and work on those edges until they are no longer at all sharp. This is vital for your hamster’s safety.

11. Now insert the cable ties through the holes.

12. Use the cable ties to secure the mesh to the window. Get the ties as tight as you can, and then use wire cutters (or in lieu of that, a pair of scissors) to clip them off.

13. You now have a functional hamster cage made from a plastic bin. You are free to decorate it in any way that you want. One excellent idea is to simply get some colorful duct tape and use it to frame the window. You could even fold it over the edges to provide further cushioning and protection.

14. Get everything set up inside your hamster bin cage, and your hamsters are ready to go in. You should then take some photos of your cage and share them online so that everyone else can appreciate your creativity.

A lot of hamster owners hesitate to get larger cages for their pets because they cost so much. But your hamster needs a lot of space, more than you probably realize. They may be small animals, but that does not mean they are happy in tiny spaces.

Thankfully now you no longer need to worry about affording a larger hamster cage. The supplies to make your own out of a plastic storage container cost very little, and the resulting home is spacious, safe, cute, and durable. If you have a few different hamsters in need of larger homes, you can make a set of these and stack them one atop the other. You can even connect them using hamster tubes. That way your pets can socialize and enjoy even more space!
