Moving into a dorm room for the first time in a few months? It is one of the most exciting times in your life, preparing to be a freshman in college. But once you take a tour on campus and see the size of your dorm room, you may wonder how you will ever organize a small space like that. In particular, you may ask, “where will I put all my makeup?” You might then start worrying about which supplies you will be able to bring and which you will have to leave behind.

It is a good question! After all, you only have a few storage possibilities in your whole room for all of your stuff. You might worry you need to leave most of your makeup at home, but that is not necessarily the case. Here are some suggestions on how to organize for college:

• Use a magnet board. This is something you can make from scratch. You just need a sheet of magnetic metal. You can put something over it like a thin layer of fabric if you want to improve its appearance. You then need to glue magnets to the backs of your makeup containers (eye shadow and so on), and then you can stick them to the board and hang the board on your wall. Ta-da! Makeup storage without the need for counter space that doesn’t exist.

• Stack cups on their sides. Have a small amount of counter space open? Get a few plastic cups and stack them on their sides so that you can make a pyramid out of them. You can then put makeup brushes, lip gloss, mascara, and other long, thin items inside them. This is a great way to make use of vertical space! Of course, if you have more space available on your counter, you can also have some upright cups for your makeup brushes.

• Use clear plastic compartment boxes. One more easy solution is to buy a few clear boxes for makeup storage. You do not need to spend an arm and a leg buying something specialized and fancy for this purpose. Even something as simple as a divided plastic craft storage box can do the trick. The compartments will help you stay organized, and since the box is clear, you can see what is inside it without having to open it. So if you have several, you can find what you are looking for at a glance. If they come with handles, you can also carry them to and from the bathroom in your dorm building.

It can be discouraging knowing that you are moving into a small space and will not be able to bring everything with you from home—but your makeup does not need to be among your sacrifices! With a few clever storage solutions like clear plastic compartment bins, magnetic boards, and stacked cups, you can find room in your tiny dorm room for all your beauty supplies.
