Snowman Plastic Bin

Materials:

• Plain white plastic bin (clear is okay, but white is better)
• Felt (any color you want—this will be used to represent a scarf)
• Buttons
• Glue

Here are the steps:

1. Start by cutting the felt into the shape of a scarf. The best way to do this is actually to cut two pieces. Cut one long piece which you will wrap all the way around the bin. Then cut another which is shorter. Make fringes out of both ends. This shorter fringed piece will be wrapped over the top of the other one. This helps the “scarf” lie flat, whereas if you used a single piece and tied it like a real scarf, it would not.

2. Wrap the felt around the bin and glue it in place to make the “scarf.”

3. Next, glue a couple of buttons below it down the center of the bin.

You have now created a plastic container with a snowman theme. It is of course an abstract interpretation of a snowman, but it gets the idea across instantly, and it is so much more exciting than a plain white bin.

If you want, you can go further with this concept. You could for example get several white plastic bins in different sizes — one large, one medium, and one small. You could put buttons on the largest bin and then stack the medium-sized bin with the scarf around it on top of that. You could then stack a third plastic container on top of that and add a few more buttons in the shape of eyes and a mouth. A triangle of orange construction paper can work as a carrot nose. Now you have a full snowman.
