Are you looking for a unique technique you can use to decorate plastic storage bins? If so, then you will want to consider decoupage. Decoupage is the art of covering pretty much any surface that you can think of using scraps of paper (such as origami paper, wallpaper, or magazine cutouts). This is an awesome way to decorate because it is fully customizable.

To learn more about this technique and the wide range of materials you can choose to work with, read How to Decorate Plastic Bins with Decoupage, Part 1. To learn how to decoupage a plastic container, read on.

1. Begin taking measurements of the clear plastic storage bin that you want to decoupage. You will need to know these measurements so that you can cut the paper materials or fabrics that you want to use to the right size to cover every surface of your bin. It is wise to add about an inch to the measurements when you are cutting the materials; this will ensure that you can achieve full coverage without any gaps.

2. Next, you will need to apply a coating of decoupage glue to the outside of your clear plastic storage drawers. I recommend using Mod Podge, which can also be used later on in the process as a sealant.

3. After you have applied the glue to the plastic surfaces that you need to cover, you can adhere the materials which you have selected to the outside of the bin. Make sure that you do this very carefully; you do not want any creases or bubbles, so do what you can to make sure that your paper or fabric is flush against the surface.

4. If you wish, you may apply additional layers of glue followed by more paper or fabric. You do not need to do this, but many decoupage artists enjoy creating a complex collage.

5. Once you have applied all of the papers or fabrics that you want to use to cover your bin, you will need to apply another layer of Mod Podge. This will act as a sealant and gloss, creating a smooth finish.

6. While many people call it good after step five above, you will achieve the most stunning effect if you wait for the first layer of Mod Podge to dry, and then apply several more subsequent layers. This will protect your work much better, and will also do an excellent job smoothing over the surface and creating a “finished” look.

Now you know all of the steps to decoupage, and are ready to beautify all of your plastic storage containers. The first time you do this process, it may take you little extra time since you are still learning. But once you get the hang of it, you will discover that you can easily decoupage a bin within a couple of hours. Now all of your bins can match the decor and colors in your home. Looking at them after your project is complete, no one will ever be able to guess that they were originally simple plastic storage bins.
