Trying to figure out how to remove grease from plastic containers, but not having any luck? While plastic food containers are fabulous for sealing and storing your leftovers in the freezer for weeks, you will find that they are tough to clean because of their porous nature. Plastic absorbs substances which come into contact with it, so acidic foods like tomato leave tough stains which are very challenging to lift.

If you read through my posts, you will learn some different methods you can use to clean plastic containers, including:

• Lemon juice
• Salt
• Vinegar (white or apple cider)
• Baking soda
• Regular dish soap

But one especially clever method is to use a couple of denture tablets.

Denture tablets generally contain a combination of mild bleach, citric acid and baking soda. Naturally these tablets are formulated to be particularly powerful when it comes to removing stains, because the last thing anyone wants is stained dentures in their mouth! They are also excellent at disinfecting for the same reason. So this makes them ideal for cleaning greasy plastic containers.

Here is how to clean plastic containers with denture tablets:

1. Pour hot water into your plastic food storage containers.
2. Add two denture tablets.
3. Let the container sit with the denture tablets and hot water inside for a few minutes.
4. Check back and rinse out the container with more hot water.
5. If there are still stains, you can repeat the steps above.
6. Once the container is clean, dry it off immediately with a towel. If you do not dry your plastic food boxes right away, you may end up with hard water stains on the plastic.

If you need to wash a plastic bin lid, you can do it the same way. Just put it inside a larger plastic container and soak it with the denture tablets.

Another method which works the same way as denture tablets is Alka Seltzer, which likewise contains citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. So if you don’t have any denture tablets in your house, but you do have Alka Seltzer, you can clean your plastic containers using the Alka Seltzer tablets.

Using Alka Seltzer or denture tablets is a great alternative to trying to wash your plastic food bins using a strong bleach. Both are milder, safer cleaning agents, and in most cases, they will do an excellent job removing even the toughest greasy stains. Best of all, you do not have to combine ingredients or necessarily do a lot of scrubbing—though a bit of scrubbing can certainly help. It is certainly one of the easiest methods you are going to find.
