Nowadays it’s a popular trend to section off a room in the home to serve as a kind of male sanctuary. This room might be distinct from other rooms in the home (For example, a spare bedroom which has been converted for the purpose), or it could be doubling as the garage, basement, study, or media room. If you are trying to figure out how to organize your man cave, you can have an especially challenging project on your hands.

Why? Well, you may also be trying to figure out how to organize your garage or basement simultaneously! That is two projects in one, and moreover, you can be working in fairly cramped quarters. It isn’t easy to have a single room with dual purposes. When organizing a man cave, your goals are:

• Create an orderly space where you can find everything.
• Make it a comfortable, livable space.
• If you will be working in your man cave, ensure you have space to work on your projects without making a mess that intrudes on the rest of your space.
• Maximize the space you do have.

If you want to get everything in order, the simplest and most practical approach is to arm yourself for the job. Purchase wire shelving units, wall mounted shelves, and pegboard shelves and baskets. Different types of shelving have different advantages and drawbacks. You’ll find free-standing shelves are easy to move around, but can take up more space than wall shelves. Pegboards are perfect for a man cave doubling as a garage, since you can use them for tools.

Plastic totes with lids are also helpful supplies for organizing a man cave. These are great for storing all kinds of miscellaneous items, especially in a man cave which is also serving as a basement. Get all the stuff out of the way that you don’t need to see or use on a daily basis so that you can use your shelves for items you want to access fast or often. Plastic bins also are handy in a man cave media room for storing video games, DVDs, etc.

If you have the supplies you need on hand, you can consolidate your mess and get it out of the way. That leaves floor space for furniture, a television set or video game console, pinball machines, pool tables, and so on. It also frees up room for you to work on your DIY projects.

One last suggestion is to use lighting in an effective way. Since many man caves are located inside basements and garages, they are seldom equipped with great lighting to begin with. One of the reasons staying organized is tough is because it is hard to see what you are doing and where things are. Purchase some quality bright lights and install them so that you can illuminate your man cave. This will not only help you to stay organized, but will also give the space a more organized look and feel.
