Don’t have room to plant fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers in your yard? Maybe you live in a small apartment and do not even have a yard. No worries—you can plant in plastic bins! Plastic containers for patio gardening make it possible to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables even if you live in an urban setting.

You may be wondering though if plastic is really the best choice. Why not go with metal or ceramic or some other material?

Here are a few reasons to choose plastic containers for growing plants:

Clear plastic containers for plants are cheap. If you shop around for ceramic containers, you will find that a large ceramic pot at the lower end of the price bracket will usually run you $30+. At the higher end, you could pay hundreds of dollars. A large plastic tub however will cost you only a few dollars. That means you can buy a lot more of them, and grow a lot more plants!

• Plastic containers are lightweight. This is a big deal, especially if you move your gardening pots around a lot. A ceramic container can be extremely heavy even before you fill it with dirt. A plastic container weighs very little by comparison. It’ll still be heavy once you have the dirt inside, but not nearly as heavy as a comparably-sized ceramic pot.

• It is easy to use plastic containers, and they work well for a wide variety of plants. The same container you use to grow tomatoes one year may work perfectly for herbs the next. You will find that preparing them for proper drainage is a breeze, and you should have them set up in no time.

• Planting tubs and containers are surprisingly durable and long-lasting, even when they are exposed to heat. Be mindful of this, however, since plastic is not breathable. Use proper shade to prevent plants from overheating. If you are not careful, they may wilt (especially if the bins are sitting on cement).

• You can use plastic containers again and again. By doing so, you keep them out of landfills. It can take centuries for plastic to degrade. The more use you make of your plastic bins, the better. You might even have a few already waiting around the house. Instead of throwing them away and polluting the environment, you can use them to grow plants on your patio. If you decide that you want to cut back on gardening operations in the future, you can repurpose them again around the house.

As you can see, plastic makes a great material for gardening containers. It is also a lot easier to jump into patio gardening when you aren’t worried about having to spend hundreds of dollars just to get started. So what are you waiting for? You may only be a small purchase away from starting a new hobby.
