We have all had that moment … you and your family have been invited to a fancy Christmas ball by a boss or relative, and you absolutely must be there. You are all dressed and ready to go, and so is your spouse, but your kids are a problem. One of them is missing his shoes, and the other is missing his tie … what a mess! You need to run out the door in five minutes. And next week, your spouse has volunteered to be a Santa at a neighborhood party, but you can’t find that Santa costume anywhere!

Organizing for the holiday season is never easy, but the wardrobe is an area of the home which can easily be neglected. You spend so much time thinking about putting up the tree and decking the halls that you completely skip out on thinking about holiday clothes.

So this year, while you are organizing your home for the holiday season, take some time to figure out your wardrobe. Start by taking a look at your social calendar and figuring out what types of events you are likely to attend.

For example, think about:

• Small, informal gatherings and parties
• More formal events which may require your family to dress up
• Events where seasonal attire is expected (Christmas sweaters, Santa costumes, etc.)
• Midnight Mass and other services
• Outdoor activities, for example touring Christmas lights on foot

Make a list of outfits and winter wear that each family member may need, and be sure to think about all the accessories.

Next, find all of the attire and accessories, and then organize closet shelves for the holidays. Set these outfits aside for each person. That way when that next party rolls around, you will instantly know where everything is that each person needs to wear. You will have checked to make sure that all the attire and accessories are in good condition, and there won’t be any last-minute panic.

Finally, you may want to take some time to come up with a solution for next year. A lot of the items that you need for holiday parties may be worn throughout the year, so you will want to keep those in your family’s wardrobes.

But some items may be specific to the holidays, like sweaters with reindeers or Santa costumes. These items can be packed away in a plastic storage bin for clothes, which you can then store out of the way when the holidays are over. Next year, all of your holiday-specific attire will be easy to locate.

While you are at it, you should also purchase a bin which you can use to store your winter coats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats, as well as long underwear, heavy socks, and other cold-weather attire you may not use the rest of the year. This bin can be stored right on top of the holiday attire bin. Next year, you will have everyone dressed for cold weather and ready for holiday cheer at the drop of a hat!
