• Get involved with local fall festivals. Farmer’s markets, Oktoberfest celebrations, and similar events are very popular at this time of year. There was a time when such festivals were mostly for vendors selling produce and other foodstuffs, but these days it is common to see all kinds of retailers selling clothing, jewelry, and even electronics. So get involved, and get planning early as to how you will set up your retail display fixtures and stands for success. The more visually appealing your display is, the more people will stop to shop!

• Come up with random holidays. Obviously Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween are the mainstays, but you want your business to stand out. One way you can do that is by coming up with original new “holidays” to center marketing efforts around. Think about the products you sell and go from there. You could have a “Fall Lawn Beautification Day” if you sell rakes and other lawn products, or if you sell winter clothes, “Scarf Saturday” or “Mitten Monday.”

• Launch a contest on social media. Not all marketing takes place in-store. This is a great time of the year to launch a photo contest on Instagram. Have customers submit a photo doing an autumn activity using one of your products, and then choose a random winner to receive a massive discount. Make sure you pick a memorable and unique hashtag for your contest, and display the winning photo on your own Instagram feed after the contest is complete.

• Offer savings later to shop now. This is the perfect deal to promote with your retail display signage in-store. Motivate customers to shop now and closer to the holidays with a shop-now, save-later deal. Give customers who reach a certain spending threshold this month a coupon to use in December. This will get them excited to shop earlier than they normally would—and it will remind them to come back in later! You could also use this idea to build your mailing list. Just offer to send out the coupon via email. You can send it out right away, and then send a reminder when the coupon becomes active.

It can be a challenge to stand out from all the other shops in your area during the fall retail season, but this is by far the most important time of year for most retail businesses. So instead of just offering the standard holidays savings, this year try some of these unique fall promotion ideas. Unite your marketing efforts online and offline, and look for ways to reach out through the community. This could be your most profitable fall retail season ever!
