One of the best things about cheap plastic storage totes is the fact that you can upgrade them so that they look anything but cheap. There are so many different ways that you can beautify your plastic boxes. You can use spray paint, metallic paint, chalkboard paint, or even fabric to improve the appearance of your plastic storage bins with lids. If you want, you can even try decoupage.

Regardless of the method that you are thinking of using, you may be wondering whether it is safe to use Mod Podge on plastic. If you are new to crafting, you may not be familiar with Mod Podge, but if you’ve been crafting for a long time, then you know it is one of the most all-around useful and versatile crafting supplies in existence. You can use it as a glue, sealant, gloss, and finish on a variety of different surfaces.

Does Mod Podge work on plastic? Does it react with plastic? The answer is, “Yes! Mod Podge does work on plastic. And no, it does not react with it.” Mod Podge was designed to affix any porous item or material onto just about any surface imaginable. The surface itself does not need to be porous in order for Mod Podge to work.

There are a couple of useful pointers to observe here:

• First of all, it is useful to keep in mind that it is relatively easy to use Mod Podge to attach porous materials such as paper to a plastic tote for storage, but if you want to attach any non-porous items, you’ll need to go with another form of adhesive.

• Mod Podge works best on sturdy, strong materials. If you use it to seal your craftsmanship on cheap plastic which is flimsy, your work could be easily damaged. Even if the cheap plastic does not break, it could deform, which could cause the Mod Podge itself to crack or peel.

• Mod Podge is meant to be layered. This does not mean that you have to layer it, but doing so can help you to achieve a better seal and a more “finished” appearance for your project.

• If you are decorating a bin which is going to be outdoors, then you definitely need the Outdoor formula of Mod Podge. Keep in mind however that even this formula is not completely waterproof, so you should follow up with a clear acrylic sealer. Even then, you should take steps to try and protect your bin from getting wet.

So the bottom line here is that you absolutely can use Mod Podge on cheap plastic tubs for storage. Keep in mind that there are a number of different formulations of Mod Podge. While Mod Podge is an all-in-one product, some formulas may be more useful for certain applications that others. Some of the finishes are also glossier-looking than others. You will need to consider the aesthetic appeal that you are going for before you choose the right Mod Podge for your plastic bin decorative project.
