Plastic bins with wheels are incredibly handy, especially large bins! I remember when I went to college. I thought I would be clever by packing all of my stuff in one huge plastic bin. Just one bin to move, right? It was a good idea in theory, except I forgot one crucial issue: the weight of the large plastic bin. It was nearly impossible to pick that thing up and move it. Taking it to and from the car was a real pain.
That is one example of a time when wheels would have been a huge help! That would have turned my oversized plastic bin into a workable idea. What I never realized was that I didn’t need to head to the store to purchase a brand new bin. I could have simply affixed wheels directly onto my huge plastic tote and kept on using it! How do you attach wheels to your plastic bins? There are a couple of methods.
• Mount them directly. For this project, you will need a drill. You will also have to go out and purchase suitable wheels which include mounting hardware. Install the wheels about an inch in from each corner. This should give you the stability that you are aiming for. Drill through the plastic and bracket the wheels directly to the bin. This is a permanent solution. You can remove the wheels later if you need to, but your bin will have holes in the bottom.
• Use self-adhesive wheels. This is a good solution if you would rather not do any drilling. If you are not so handy, you can go to the store and purchase wheels which will adhere to your bins on their own. In fact, they are specifically designed for this purpose. They are not as sturdy as mounted wheels, and you may need to replace them over time as the adhesive wears down, but it can be a great short-term solution if you do not need the bin for heavy-duty use.
Of course, you can also purchase plastic bins on wheels for storage that come with the wheels already on them. You may want to do this if you are not up for a DIY project or the self-adhesive wheels are not doing the trick for you. The only problem is, wheels are not always ideal on a bin. You may be planning on using the same bin for storage later, and the last thing you want is for it to roll around. If you want to stack up other bins on top of it, you do not want it to be so unstable.
Mounting wheels is relatively easy, and the tools required are basic. And those self-adhesive wheels may be all you need if you just need to wheel the bin around temporarily. They also offer the advantage of being easy to remove if you no longer need them or discover they are in the way when you go back to using the bin for storage instead of transportation.
