Looking for interesting uses for plastic storage bins? While most people look for cheap plastic bins for sale in order to serve as a simple, pragmatic storage solutions, there are actually a lot of cool plastic storage bin DIY projects. In 8 Unusual Uses for Plastic Bins You’ve Never Thought Of, Part 1, I introduced you to the following ideas:

1. Build a garden feature in the ground.
2. Start worm composting.
3. Hide a power strip.
4. Build a bench.

Now let’s look at a few more plastic container projects you may not have thought of!

5. Make a sensory play table.

Have a young child who is at the sensory play stage of development? If you build a framework for a sensory play table, you can insert a large plastic tub and fill it with all kinds of fun materials for sensory play. If you want, you can also skip the frame and just use the tub by itself.

5. Create a child’s toy.

There are a lot of ways you can use plastic containers to create toys for children. One of the simplest and most clever ones I have seen is to paint the shapes of stovetop burners on the lid of a plastic container along with dials. Then buy some toy dishes and foods, and you have a toy cooking set on a shoestring budget. What is awesome is that when the set is not in use, all the toy ingredients and cookware can be stored inside the bin.

7. Make a litter box.

A litter box is literally a plastic bin anyway—so why not save money and make your own by simply modifying a general purpose bins for the same use? Make it a top-loading bin by putting a hole on the top and you won’t have to worry about litter being kicked out of the box. You can complete this project quickly and really cut back on pet supply costs and messes!

8. Build a hamster cage.

Also in the pet category, you can use a plastic tote to build a hamster cage. Designing a DIY plastic bin cage is pretty easy all told, and it is a good deal less expensive than purchasing a ready-made hamster cage from the pet store. You can even decorate the cage and personalize it any way you like. If you want to enlarge your hamsters’ home in the future, you can easily modify it later by adding on more bins and constructing tunnels leading between them. If you are interested in this project, check the archive for detailed instructions.

You can see now that plastic storage bins really are useful for a lot more than your basic storage needs. While they are great for books, clothes, socks, and so on, they also can be turned into children’s toys, litter boxes, hamster cages, and more. While you are working on these fun DIY projects, you probably will come up with a few unique ideas of your own for working with plastic bins!
