It’s back to school time! On one hand, you may be breathing a sigh of relief. At least with your kids back in the classroom, they won’t be tracking mud through your hallways, and they won’t be strewing their toys all over the house. On the other hand, school brings a lot of organizational challenges of its own. Without a good system in place, you can find yourself with all kinds of school-related clutter building up throughout your home. Here are some ways you can help your kids get organized for school.

1. Check out homework station ideas and set up a homework area for your child. Get your child to help you out on this one. All kids have unique needs for their study areas. Simple supplies like folders and plastic containers for school supplies can help your child keep this area neat and clean. Children with organized school supplies not only make less of a mess in the house, but their grades are often higher too!

2. Help your child organize their backpack. You can do this firstly by purchasing a backpack with lots of helpful compartments that your child can get more use out of. A sturdy backpack will cost more but will also last much longer. Binders are typically recommended to keep children organized, but also consider alternatives like accordion folders which some children may prefer.

3. Get your child’s wardrobe organized. It can be a battle to get children dressed in the morning in time to get to school before the bell rings. This is a bigger problem with fussy children, but even flexible kids can dawdle in the mornings. Come up with an organized wardrobe system that makes it simple and effortless to pull out a choice of clothing every morning. One great trick is to have your child choose their outfit and lay it out the night before. That way there is no fuss in the morning.

4. Get your child a school planner if the school does not provide one. Usually when schools hand out planners, children learn to use them as a matter of habit, but not all schools provide these. Purchase a planner for your child which helps them to organize not just their space, but also their time. This ensures that homework assignments get done in time and your child doesn’t forget to study for that important math quiz later in the week!

Getting organized for school can feel like a major chore every year. Just remember that it is as much a chore for your child as it is for you, and they are feeling the same frustration that you are. Still, this is a time of opportunity, and a wonderful chance to teach your young one more organizational skills which will be useful throughout his or her life. Get your son or daughter off on the right foot this year and watch as your child excels in school!
