What You Don’t Realize About Organizing Blogs and Videos, Part 2

You know those absolutely gorgeous photos you see on Pinterest of perfectly organized homes—and those perfect moms with their perfect white-picket fence homes and perfectly behaved children on YouTube? You know those absolutely gorgeous photos you see on Pinterest of perfectly organized homes—and those perfect moms with their perfect white-picket fence homes and perfectly behaved children on YouTube? If you are into organizing tips and tricks, I am guessing you spend a lot of time looking at videos, photos, and blogs like these. But you may be discouraged because try as you might, you never seem to get the totally amazing results you see online.

Why not? Well, as I discussed in What You Don’t Realize About Organizing Blogs and Videos, Part 1, there is likely a huge gap between the picture-perfect homes you see in most organizing blogs and the reality of your own life. The people who put these blogs, photos, and videos together are doing so to make money, and usually they have plenty of time to work on them since a spouse is busy bringing home the majority of the bread.

You may not have that blessing on your side. You might be your home’s breadwinner. You come home exhausted each day after 6 o’clock. You simply don’t have all day to dedicate to organizing. For that reason, it is simply unrealistic to expect the same results.

Another thing to know about these blogs is that many of their owners may have some level of professional training and expertise, whether with design, photography, or multimedia and mass communications. This helps them to present their organized homes in the best possible light.

Plus, you have to realize that the photos and videos are themselves a product of creativity and hard work. It isn’t like an organized mom blogger walks into a random room in her house one day, and shoots a picture of utter perfection. She needs to set everything up in that spot so that it looks immaculate for the photo shoot. She has to select the right lighting and framing too. For all you know, the next room over is a mess!

In short, when it comes to organizing your home ideas, context is everything.

You may be familiar with the “nailed it” meme. Well, that meme is spot on—that is reality. You are not an organizing professional. You do not have the abundance of time, training and resources as the home organizers who inspire you online. And remember, the reality of even their homes probably isn’t nearly as flawless as their presentation.

What is the bottom line here, the takeaway message? I just want you to know that you do not have to achieve perfection, nor should you expect to. Very few people actually live in homes like you see on Pinterest, so why hold yourself up to such an unreachable standard of perfect home organization? All that will do is discourage you when you don’t “nail it.” So with that in mind, enjoy your Pinterest inspiration, but enjoy the results of your own hard work even more—even if they don’t look quite as perfect! They are just as big an achievement, maybe even more so if you are juggling more responsibilities!
