Looking for plastic storage bin makeover ideas? If you are tired of your plastic bins disrupting your décor, you can easily disguise them. There are so many different craft ideas for cheap plastic storage totes which can really upgrade their appearance, but one of my favorites is covering them with jute.

In case you are not familiar with jute, it is a basic supply you can purchase at the craft store. It is a rough fiber which is used to make rope, twine, matting and sacks. When you wrap something in jute, you instantly give it a rustic look which fits in very well with today’s trendy homespun décor.

So how do you decorate a plastic container with jute? Here is a quick tutorial.

Materials needed:

• Plastic storage container with lid or without
• Jute
• Fabric
• Glue gun and hot glue sticks
• Four wheels
• Wood cut to the same length as the container
• Drill
• Bolts and nuts

Steps

1. This step is optional. If you want to attach wheels to your bin, do so before starting with the jute. Glue two pieces of wood to the bottom of the tote, one on either side. Drill holes through the plastic and the wood, and then attach a wheel in each corner using the nuts and bolts.

2. Line the inside of the bin with your fabric. It can be helpful to glue it over the edges as well at the top so that it lines the bin all around. This prevents you from having to go all the way to the top with the jute (though it is partly an aesthetic choice, and entirely up to you).

3. Next you need to wrap the jute around the bin! Just start at the bottom of the bin, and begin wrapping the jute around the outside, gluing as you go. This will take you a while, but it does not require a whole lot of mental energy, so you can watch TV while you do this. If you want, you can also do the lid. Just start wrapping around the outer edge, going in toward the middle (or start in the middle and work your way outward). Of course, you can skip the lid altogether and dispense with it if you want (which may be better, since it can be hard to close the bin after you have put fabric over the edges).

A simple project like this can fill a few hours on a rainy afternoon, and it can really beautify a plastic bin. Once your bin is covered in jute and has fabric lining the interior, nobody looking at it will be able to tell that it is plastic underneath. They will think you just bought it that way from the store! Your jute-covered bin will fit in nicely with your rustic décor, so you can display it proudly in your living room or any other room in your house.
